So much of this! And it can change from one story to the next. I’ve talked a lot about my headcanon for Charles in XMFC; I’ve thought a lot about what it would be like to have telepathy and how it would affect him. I also fanwank a lot of things (that is, justify them to make things more like how I want to interpret them) so for instance, I don’t want Charles to really reject Raven’s true form as much as he might have appeared to in XMFC. So in the scene when Raven asks “Would you date me?” and he’s not paying attention, making notes on a book and saying, “Of course, any young man would be lucky to be with you, you are stunning,” I interpret that as Charles reassuring her on autopilot. (Particularly because he says ‘stunning’— he also used ‘stunning’ to compliment the heterochromia girl he tries to pick up at the pub.) So when Raven says “Looking like this?” and Charles says, “…Blue?” and then tells her “I’m incapable of thinking of you that way, you’re my oldest friend, I feel responsible for you, anything else would just feel wrong,” he’s tap dancing there because the fact that she asked him if he’d date her while she’s blue takes it out of the hypothetical and potentially makes it a serious question about him, since he’s the only person who’s ever seen her blue. And because he regards her as his sister, he ends up doing some fast talking when he suspects maybe she means it. (And in some of my headcanons, he gets over that whole ‘sister’ thing…)
