I think I’ve seen “Charles has left the X-Men! Erik knows something horrible must have happened! Erik rescues Charles!” but I can’t recall a (relatively) rational Charles simply quitting… In a near!AU, maybe? Memory stirs. But a commonly imagined response seems to be bewilderment, profound disappointment, and a sense of loss, even of being set adrift.

What about: “After briefly battling Weapon Alpha, and, later, Warhawk, Phoenix returned from the Savage Land to tell Professor X that all the X-Men were dead. I wasn’t thinking past current fanfic, so yes! God, I love Claremont! Still, Professor X didn’t so much say, “Fuck the X-Men,” as “Fuck, my X-Men are dead.” Magneto didn’t come into that story, did he? I do wish the wiki had [ETA: more comprehensive] issue numbers.

Xavier was written out of plotlines so many times, though— he’s missing! He’s in space! He was abducted! He’s in a coma! He’s missing again! Surely at least one of those times when they found him again he was like “You know, I just got sick of this shit.”
